We have thoroughly covered the known long crank/no crank issues on the 3.0-liter Duramax Diesel engine. And despite a [production halt on the manufacturing of this engine](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/08/gm-3-0l-duramax-diesel-production-halted-not-discontinued/>), there is still no response from General Motors or a pending recall for this issue.

Though we recently did [a video summarizing these issues](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPDHlBbrXf0&t=21s>), we now have more information provided by a frustrated owner.

### Long crank/no crank issue for 3.0L Duramax Diesel engine

According to forums, message boards and YouTube, it seems the No. 1 culprit can be a bent or warped camshaft wheel. If the wheel isn’t making contact in all the right places, you may wait a while for the wheel to spin and make enough contact to turn over. Or the engine may not start at all. If this is the issue, you’re looking at a 40- to 50-hour job to lift and completely remove the truck cab to replace this part.

Recently, we were contacted by Ryan Nassar, an owner who has a truck with this engine.

“When I push the start button it cranks for about 15-20 seconds but doesn’t start,” he said. “Give it about 30 seconds, and it starts right up.”

Nassar can confirm what others have said, and according to his dealer this is a 50-hour job to fix.

“My dealer wants to bury their head because it’s a big job,” he said. “I noticed they have a freeze on the 3.0 Duramax currently. I’m sure if that’s why. It’s about a 50-hours-cab-off job apparently according to my dealer.”

Though Nassar (and a lot of us) assume the production halt on the engine is due to the long crank issue, GM hasn’t confirmed this is the case.

### Replacing the wheel isn’t always the fix

Truck owners are reporting multiple culprits that have fixed the long crank issues on their 3.0-liter Duramax Diesel engines. These include, but aren’t limited to, a faulty wiring harness, updated ECU, camshaft position exciter wheel, fuse boxes needing to be torqued, faulty actuators and faulty fuel pumps. Of course, a lot of dealer mechanics are going to start with the simple things and move down the line, meaning your truck could be in and out of the dealership multiple times to troubleshoot and hopefully correct the problem.

More information on known issues with this engine can be found on [the MyLemon.com website](<https://www.mylemon.com/lemon-law-blog/3-0-liter-duramax-diesel-engine-problems/>).

### Bottom line on Duramax Diesel long crank issue

GM’s 3.0-liter I-6 turbo-diesel is the most fuel-efficient engine for the Silverado 1500. It has an EPA rating of 23 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway in 2WD and 22 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway in 4WD. It produces 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The fuel economy and combined towing power of the small Duramax is an advantage for GM. And, in fact, this engine is highly regarded and has won several awards.

However, there’s clearly an issue with multiple long crank/no crank issues being reported, and we are huge proponents of transparency. So, it would behoove GM to address this issue, despite the 50-hour fix time (which is pricey in a recall).
