The Pro Power Onboard technology in the [Ford F-150 Lightning](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/09/f-150-lightning-enters-pre-production-as-ford-doubles-down-on-electrified-future/>) and [F-150 hybrid](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/08/2021-f-150-hybrid-camping-with-the-onboard-generator/>) turns the truck into a moving generator. We’ve seen how the [F-150 Hybrid helped tornado victims in Kentucky](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/12/ford-powers-tornado-relief-efforts-with-f-150-hybrid-pickups/>) a couple weeks ago as well as [during an ice storm in Texas](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diyi0Syjntg&list=PL8PJw4jHcHhcuxMDyxh5negt5NgT31BCV&index=3>) last year. But now Ford is offering a Mobile Power Cord that will allow F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost owners to “share” range with other electric vehicle owners, allowing them to charge a friend’s vehicle during an outage or top off an EV battery for a neighbor.

When connected to an F-150 Lightning or F-150 PowerBoost with the optional 9.6 or 7.2 kilowatt [Pro Power Onboard](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/10/generator-or-inverter-2021-ford-f-150-pro-power-onboard-explained/>), the Ford Mobile Power Cord charger can deliver Level-2 charging, which is estimated to add an average range of 20 miles per charging hour on a Mustang Mach-E with extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive. It will add up to 13 miles of charge per hour on the upcoming F-150 Lightning, and it will add an average range of 10 miles per charging hour to [a Ford E-Transit low-roof cargo van](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/11/5-reasons-the-2022-ford-e-transit-is-a-big-deal-1-key-miss/>).

But the cord will work with most other EVs out there, essentially turning these two F-150 trucks into mobile Level-2 charging stations.

“There are hundreds of benefits to Ford Pro Power Onboard – and we’ve added one more,” said Patrick Soderborg, Ford e-powertrain systems engineer. “Taking power on the road or having extra energy at home brings a lot of convenience and security, and using the F-150 Lightning or F-150 hybrid to top off a friend’s electric vehicle or help them during an outage is one of the many new benefits our customers gain from our Built Ford Tough electrified trucks.”

### How the Ford Mobile Power Cord works

Customers can easily take advantage of this capability, using a widely available power adaptor to link the Ford Mobile Power Cord to their truck. Once connected to the 240-volt Pro Power Onboard outlet, customers can use the Mobile Power Cord to charge a range of all-electric vehicles that use the SAE J1772 charge port. This includes the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Ford E-Transit electric van and the all-new 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup, as well as vehicles from other manufacturers.

Using the Mobile Power Cord, plug in to the bed of the truck in the 30A (240-volt outlet) and then put the other end using adapter L14-30P to 14-50R into the vehicle that needs a charge. This only works on trucks equipped with the 7.2 kW Onboard generator or the 9.6 kW version, which will debut exclusively in the F-150 Lightning this spring.

### The bottom line on Ford Mobile Power Cord

Ford says this power cord is included in the purchase of a Ford EV. The adaptor (not included), which is available for around $15, might’ve made a great addition to my [suggested holiday gift guide](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/12/2021-holiday-gift-guide-for-truck-suv-enthusiasts/>). Regardless, Mobile Power Cord represents yet another bit of technology to make charging an EV easier and showcases the power of the F-150 Hybrid as more than just another pickup truck. It really is a generator on wheels.

This could come in handy during a time of need, so why not?
