Stellantis is conducting a voluntary safety recall on 2021 and 2022 Ram heavy-duty trucks equipped with a Cummins 6.7-liter turbo diesel engine. The automaker announced the recall that will affect 131,177 heavy-duty trucks after an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed a fire hazard related to solid-state intake heater relays on some 2021 and 2022 model year trucks.

As of now, the recall impacts 67,597 2021-22 Ram 2500 trucks built between August 3, 2020, and October 8, 2021; 39,234 2021-22 Ram 3500 trucks built between August 5, 2020, and October 8, 2021; 7,317 Ram 3500 Chassis Cabs built between August 12, 2020, and October 7, 2021; and 16,939 Ram 4500/5500 Chassis Cabs built between November 13, 2020, and October 8, 2021.

The recall states that any of the aforementioned trucks “equipped with the Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel engine can experience an engine compartment fire originating from the Solid State Intake Heater Grid Relay (“Relay”).” Owners of these impacted vehicles are urged to not drive them and keep them parked until the warrantied repair can be made.

There have been no known injuries or incidents related this issue, according to Stellantis. The warranty work on the recalled vehicles will begin after customers are notified starting December 3. According to the NHTSA report, any vehicles built after October 8 were manufactured with a different intake heater relay and therefore, no further recalls are expected.

We first reported on a similar [Ram recall](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/03/ram-recall-certain-trucks-with-the-cummins-diesel-could-catch-fire/>) earlier this year, and also trucks with this engine in the 2013-2017 model year had been previously recalled, [also due to fire issues](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2017/09/2013-2017-ram-trucks-cummins-engines-recalled-water-pump-fire-concern/>). In that instance the Ram recall pertained to the bearing in the water pump, which could fail and overheat.

Owners may also contact the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to [www.safercar.gov](<https://www.safercar.gov/>) and search by VIN number or year, make and model.

### The bottom line on Ram Super Duty recalls

Recalls are never good. Especially when the words fire hazard are involved. But Stellantis was wise to voluntarily recall all of the impacted trucks. No known issues have been reported, and that *is* a good thing.
