Personally, I’m ready for him to make up his mind and buy a [Ram 1500 EcoDiesel]() already but hey, he’s the publisher and he can do what he wants, right? Or what Managing Editor Jill Ciminillo says (she’s #TeamTundra, by the way). Yeah, let’s go with that. ### **Engines, payload and towing** The [2022 Ram 1500]() GT is a street truck. The body matching bumper, thin street tires and GT badging are cool, but that’s all appearance stuff. When it comes to comparing these two trucks we need to look at what’s under the hood, and this one has a 5.7-liter V-8 engine. Surprisingly, the fuel economy in the [2022 Toyota Tundra]() is about the same, even though it has a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. You’d think a smaller engine equals better fuel economy, but you’d be wrong. Toyota has made a big deal about the Tundra’s upgraded towing capacity. And for a 3.5-liter V-6 we’re pretty impressed with the 11,120-pound tow limit and a payload limit of 1,400 pounds. Ram’s tow limit is 11,200 pounds and payload is 1,324, making these trucks very compatible when it comes to the real work they can do. The trucks also have the same suspension. ### **Features, features, features** It seems like the crazy [tailgate wars]() are over, and the standard dampened tailgates have won out. But that doesn’t mean little things like the release button hidden in the Tundra’s taillight won’t catch your attention. Or that getting rid of a built-in step will go unnoticed. In this case, Ram keeps the bumper step while Toyota opts to make a power step an optional add-on. Speaking of steps, a big difference between these two trucks is the running boards. Ram’s are powered and they pull up out of the way giving the truck a little more ground clearance. Toyota’s are fixed steps, but they look pretty darned cool. When it comes to storage, it seems like the Ram wins because of its flat-loading floor, Ram Bins and Ram Boxes.
