We already knew that the GMC Hummer pickup and Sierra 1500 [would be getting Super Cruise](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/12/trailering-hands-free-yep-in-2022-gmc-sierra-gets-super-cruise/>) with hands-free towing. So, the first bit of news today is that General Motors is adding this new semi-autonomous tech to the Chevrolet Silverado as well as Cadillac Escalade, CT5 and CT4.

If you aren’t familiar with Super Cruise, it’s GM’s version of technology that will let you take your hands off the steering wheel on select highways (no side streets here) while keeping your eyes on the road, and let you drive hands free while paying attention. There’s a camera pointed at your eyes to make sure they’re pointed in the right direction.

We asked a lot of questions back in December about how hands-free towing would be possible and what new tech it would add, and we still have no answers.

Looking at [the generic GM press release](<https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2021/jul/0723-gm-supercruise.html>), we see that in addition to towing, Super Cruise will add automatic lane change capability as well as an enhanced navigation display. What’s more interesting, however, is the release states “select model year 2021 vehicle owners” will be able to receive an over-the-air-update to add this feature to their vehicles. Since Escalade is currently the only vehicle listed above that has Super Cruise, we assume this is an Escalade-only opportunity.

When we popped over to [the GMC media](<https://media.gmc.com/media/us/en/gmc/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2021/jul/0723-gmc-supercruise.html>) site to see if there were any additional details to be had, though, we did get one additional new tidbit of information: GMC confirmed the “new” 2022 Sierra 1500 will be in dealers this fall. While GMC doesn’t clarify what “new” means exactly, it does say the truck will get “significant updates to design, capability and technology.”

We’ve seen Sierra [interior spy shots](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/05/upgraded-but-is-it-enough-2022-gmc-sierra-interior-spy-photos/>), and we had [reported earlier this month](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/07/refreshed-2022-chevy-silverado-1500-still-on-track/>) the 2022 refresh for Silverado was on track, but (there’s always one of those) as we learned yesterday, GM is [idling the plants](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/07/gm-to-halt-full-size-truck-production-for-a-week/>) that make these trucks for a week.

So, it could be an interesting couple months leading up to this fall.

**The bottom line**

It makes sense General Motor would roll out Super Cruise to more vehicles in its lineup, and adding hands-free towing is the practical evolution to this technology. But we’ll be very curious to know how the technology will account for the length of the thing being towed. It could be as simple as the driver entering the length in the infotainment system.

As for the “new” 2022 Sierra (and presumably Silverado), we’re curious there, too. Will the design changes be enough to keep the haters at bay?

Stay tuned.
