After months of anticipation, the 2022 Nissan Frontier will be heading to production and will be hitting dealer lots later this summer.

Nissan says its new Frontier will be built at the Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Mississippi like the prior generation, and this underscores the “company’s more than six decades of truck expertise in the U.S.”

The Frontier has been built at this plant since 2012, and the 3.8-liter V-6 engine will come from the Nissan Decherd Powertrain Plant in Decherd, Tennessee.

### **What’s new on 2022 Nissan Frontier**

While the prior model was one of the oldest midsize trucks on the market, the new [2022 Nissan Frontier](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/02/2022-nissan-frontier-damn-this-looks-good/>) is a big leap forward in design, technology and powertrain. The exterior features a much more rugged look with some design elements from the full-size Nissan Titan as well as borrowing a few ideas from the segment-leading Toyota Tacoma.

Inside, the cabin sees a whole new look complete with the standard, and largest-in-segment, 7-inch driver display as well as an optional 9-inch color infotainment touchscreen.

While we have only seen the [PRO-4X version of the Frontier,](<https://www.nissanusa.com/vehicles/trucks/frontier.html>) the styling complete with Nissan’s new logo as well as color matching stitching go together really well.

Powering the Nissan Frontier will be the 3.8-liter V-6 mated to an 9-speed automatic transmission with 310 horsepower. You can get this in either 2WD or 4WD, and after [our first drive of this powertrain back in 2019](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agK8f1R7nkM&feature=youtu.be>), it is well suited for the midsize Frontier.

Finally, technology such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. WiFi and wireless charging are available. Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 is also available on every trim.

Nissan says the new Frontier should be in dealer showrooms throughout the U.S. and Canada in late summer 2021.

### The bottom line

When Nissan first announced the 2022 Frontier back in February, we were impressed by its styling and features as a solid competitor. Since then, the semiconductor shortages pushed everything back and while Frontier fans and prospective buyers may feel they waited an excessive amount of time to see the pickup in real life, the timing is really the norm these days.

Once it does hit the market, it will be interesting to see how it plays out with the [new compact Ford Maverick](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/06/5-things-to-know-about-the-2022-ford-maverick/>) gathering a lot of attention, a new Ford Ranger on the way as well as a Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

As far as the late summer timing, we think dealers close to the Canton plant should see models in early August while others won’t get them until September, depending on location and proximity to rail yard trail heads.
