Supplier sources tell [GM-Trucks.com](<https://www.gm-trucks.com/exclusive-new-silverado-sierra-2022-delayed/>), the anticipated refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra will be delayed due to the global semiconductor shortage, as well as other parts shortages, affecting the industry. This is big news for truck buyers who have been holding out for a new Silverado or Sierra.

### **Changes for 2022 Chevy Silverado, Sierra delayed**

A refreshed Silverado and Sierra has been a hot rumor for a while now with spy photos showing exterior updates as well as a possible ZR2 variant. The plan seems to have been to update the exterior and make a big change to the interior which was the target of much criticism. Now those plans seem to be on hold.

We have reached out to GM for comment and will update this story if we receive additional information.

The global semiconductor shortage has pushed many companies to either delay plans and/or change the way they build trucks. For GM, they shifted their supply of semiconductors to the highly profitable full-size truck and SUV lineup, even pushing the [Oshawa, Canada plant into production faster](<https://globalnews.ca/news/7836033/oshawa-assembly-plant-restart-gm-canada/>) to build trucks, while slowing down production of less popular models.

They also [removed the Active Fuel Management system](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/03/2021-chevy-silverado-gmc-sierra-get-less-mpg-due-to-worldwide-semiconductor-shortage/>) from their small block engines to allow them to continue building trucks without needing additional semiconductors. The removal turned into a $50 credit for new truck buyers and 1 MPG less.

For truck buyers, this means they will have to wait a little longer for a new interior on the Silverado or Sierra as well as the AFM system to be added back into the trucks. Currently, experts are suggesting upwards of a year or better until the semiconductor shortage is back under control.

Also, GM is not alone in having problems building vehicles with all automakers struggling to build enough vehicles to meet demand.

### **The bottom line**

This news means consumers are just going to have to be patient when it comes to purchasing a new truck. They should also expect to spend more on a new truck with inventory so constrained on dealer lots — this will mean less incentives.

Right now is simply not the ideal time to buy a new pickup truck. So, if you can wait, that will be the best possible course of action — especially if you want to save some money and aren’t happy with what is currently on dealer lots.
