(Image courtesy of Ford Motor Co.) Ford Motor Co. has announced that its all-electric pickup truck will be called the F-150 Lightning. But other than that, we still don’t have too many details. Ford first announced an all-electric version of its full-size pickup truck [back in September](), and all we knew then is that the truck would go on sale sometime in 2022 and that it would be built at the Ford Rouge Complex in Dearborn, Michigan. Today, other than the name, we did get one more detail: It will be revealed on May 19 at 9.30 p.m. EST on Ford’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter accounts. In [its incredibly brief press release](), Ford did also confirm it will be faster than the original F-150 Lightning, it will receive over-the-air updates and it will receive some kind of on-board generator that can “power your home during an outage.” In case you don’t remember the original F-150 Lightning, when it left the lineup in 2004, it was equipped with a 5.4-liter V-8 that delivered 380 horsepower. As *[Car and Driver reported]()* in an article on some leaked documents pertaining to the new F-150 Lightening, the gas-powered model had a 0-to-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds. So, expect the EV version to be faster than that. In our original article about the announcement, we made some educated guesses on what this new vehicle would include. To summarize a few of our more important guesses: - Because Ford has said this will be the most powerful F-150, we presume it will deliver more than 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque, which are the current PowerBoost HEV numbers. - The F-150 Lightning will get a version of Ford’s [Pro Power Onboard](), likely akin to the up-level 7.2-kW version found on the hybrid. - Ford has stated this truck will be capable without compromises, and that includes towing. So, we have to guess it will be able to match the PowerBoost model, which has a towing capacity that exceeds 12,000 pounds. - To be on par with the [Mustang Mach-E](), range will have to be at least 300 miles for the long-range battery pack. The above bullet points are merely guesses on our part, so we’ll be very curious on May 19 to see the actual details. (Image courtesy of Ford Motor Co.) ### **The bottom line on the F-150 Lightning** I’m excited to see this truck brought to market – especially if it delivers on what Jim Farley, Ford Motor Co. CEO, promised during the original announcement when he said it wasn’t a gimmick. “While other all electric pickup trucks are competing for lifestyle customers, the all-electric F-150 is designed and engineered for hard-working customers that need a truck to do a job.” Farley said. “This isn’t a truck for never nevers, who never tow, never haul and never go off road.
