It’s winter in Nebraska, and our Publisher Tim Esterdahl hadn’t driven [his 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/12/bought-2021-ford-f-150-powerboost/>) in 3-4 days when the temperatures dropped below freezing. He’s wondering how it will handle the extreme cold and snowy streets. So, of course, he was going to [make a video](<https://youtu.be/iUOa1yjTJK4>) to see if he could start his truck, a hybrid, in cold weather

### **– 6 degrees. Feels like -19**

On the third day of negative temperatures, it was time to take the F-150 hybrid out for a spin on snowy roads. But, would the truck even start?

It did! Turned right over. After turning on the defrost, heat and seat heaters, Tim left the truck to warm up while he cleared off the driveway. After just 8 minutes, the engine had already warmed up, and the interior was nice and cozy.

Now, you’ll have to watch the video to see how will those [Pirelli Scorpion ATR tires made for the 2021 Ford F-150](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2021/01/deep-dive-pirelli-scorpion-atr/>) handle the un-plowed roads.

### **Is there battery loss in cold weather?**

Yes, you do experiece battery loss in cold temperatures. It’s a proven fact. But in a hybrid, the engine charges the battery, so unlike a full electric vehicle, you don’t have to worry too much about it. The truck will start in electric mode, and it will soon realize it needs more power for heating up and kick the engine on.

Fuel economy will also drop, but in conditions like this, safety is a lot more important than fuel economy. Tim puts the truck in 4-high and chooses the Slippery drive mode before heading out into 6 to 12 inches of snow.

### **A few things to remember**

When you’ve got a vehicle covered in snow, and you’re driving on salted roads your cameras and senors are going to get dirty or just plain covered up. This can impair safety features like park assist, adaptive cruise and automatic braking. It can also make for poor imaging on your backup cameras.

Tim did test the truck’s ABS at a stop sign, coming to a complete stop from 15 to 16 MPH and the ABS kicked in just fine.

What do you think? Is the [2021 Ford F-150 Powerboost](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/06/f-150-powerboost-details-we-know/>) a great winter driving truck?
