2021 Chevrolet Equinox RS

The Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain are strong sellers for both Chevy and GMC in the hotly contested CUV market. But while their respective places in GMC and Chevy’s sales plans are firmly set in stone, it has been the complete opposite when it comes to what engines were offered to customers.

Originally, the two had [an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2018/06/2018-chevrolet-equinoxs-turbocharged-2-0-liter-engine/>) before it was dropped for 2021, with the 1.5-turbo being the sole engine offering. But it appears that GM is having some power envy when viewing the broader segment, and has reintroduced the beefier engine to both models for 2022.

That’s according to a report from our friends at [GM Authority](<https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/09/2022-chevy-equinox-gmc-terrain-to-return-with-2-0l-turbo-engine-option/>), but for those hoping it will mean the return of the 252-horsepower version of this engine, be prepared for the one main caveat here. Instead of that engine, the 2.0-liter here will be a newer version, with this engine already seeing duty in the Cadillac XT4 and the bigger [Chevrolet Blazer.](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/08/2021-chevy-blazer-review/>) That means a slight dip in power, with this engine producing 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. However, this loss of muscle comes with an increase in efficiency, with the report stating that the new engine has better emissions and higher refinement than the older unit.

We hope that this latest engine swap will be the final word (especially in the Equinox) for under the hood changes for a bit, with the Chevy already dropping its [slow-selling diesel engine](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2017/08/2018-chevrolet-equinox-turbo-diesel-returns-39-mpg-highway-fwd/>) back in 2020. With some of its rivals already having more time to sell customers on the value of their more established engine lineups, the constant flux that has defined the state of affairs for the Equinox and its GMC sibling undoubtedly gave them a disadvantage in this regard.
