By Tim Esterdahl Published: 2020-01-23T18:57:27+00:00 Updated: 2025-07-23T15:19:30+00:00 ![Featured image]() Outside of Houston, Texas, John Freeland’s 2000 Ford Super Duty keeps racking up the miles without any major service or much complaint. The workhorse diesel pickup just simply gets the job done. We recently had a chance to visit with Mr. Freeland and discuss his truck as well as learn his maintenance secrets, he is a big fan of BG products. Also, we found out this 80-year-old man still breaks concrete as an 8th degree black belt during events with his Karate demonstration team. He is quite the character and it is apparent he loves his Ford trucks as well as used his truck for work as a hot shot driver. ![]()During his hot shot career, he kept paper records of where he drove, how much fuel he used and where he was when he hit the million mile mark. According to his notes, he was on I-10 west, mile marker 637 near Luling, Texas and it was on Thursday, May 17, 2012. What’s even more interesting is that after passing the million mile mark, Freeland didn’t stop. Instead, he “wanted to see just how far this piece of machinery would go,” and kept putting on the miles. ![]() While most of the maintenance was to be expected – new hoses, alternators, batteries, etc… a few things do stand out. First, it is the original 7.3L V8 engine and manual, yes you read that right, zero [engine needs](), and a manual transmission albeit with a new clutch and pressure plate. The rear end is stock and, like the other million mile Chevy owner we interviewed, he used Michelin tires getting extraordinary mileage out of them in the range of 120k miles. Finally, the rear end wasn’t touched, neither were the various suspension parts and the truck is rust free including the frame which looks exceptionally for a 20 year-old truck with 1.3 million miles on it. ![]()The only really interesting thing he had to replace was the steering box.
