![](<https://pickuptrucktalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Ford-F-150-740x493.jpg>)Ford has announced it will recall 1.48 million pickups to address an issue where the pickup might downshift unexpectedly leading to an unexpected loss of control.

The recall will focus on select 2011-2013 models with a six-speed automatic transmission. This transmission could inadvertently downshift into first gear without warning. With such a rapid shift, this could lead to a loss of control of the pickup. Ford says they are aware of 5 accidents including one report of whiplash potentially related to the issue according to a [Reuters.com report](<https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ford-motor-recall/ford-recalls-148-million-f-150-pickups-in-north-america-over-transmissions-idUSKCN1Q21SC>).

This recall will cover 1.26 million pickups in the U.S. and another 221,000 from Canada. Dealers will updated the powertrain control software and Ford says it plans to notify customers starting next month, March, 2019.

The 1.48 million pickup recall is just the latest in a string of transmission downshift related problems for the automaker. In March 2016, Ford recalled 153,000 2011-2012 Ford F-150, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models for a similar problem. Ford says that recall was to address a different issue.

Then, in December 2017, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into whether the March, 2016 recall should be expanded by nearly 1.4 million 2011-2013 vehicles after 123 complaints and two crashes occurred with no reported injuries. That investigation is still ongoing.

This recall should be completed quickly and timing is really about how long it takes for owners to bring their pickup into their local dealership.
