In certain configurations, the fuel economy for the new pickup is WORSE than the outgoing model. [Embedded video]() Thanks to the investigate work of several automotive journalists, [AutoNews.com]() (subscription required) is reporting the fuel economy on the 2019 model is less than what many people would expect. The information comes from [FuelEconomy.Gov]() which lists the MPG for the 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500. Comparing the information on that site with the 2018 model reveals some shocking differences. ![https://youtu.be/ugr7YBeM2Wg]()A few things to keep in mind is although the new Silverado is hundreds of pounds lighter than the outgoing model, it is larger and has a larger front fascia contributing to more aerodynamic drag. “We increased towing capacity, payload, and it’s a much larger bed and a much larger cab,” Chevrolet Spokesperson Monte Doran told *AutoNews*. Also, the rear axle ratio is different with the 2019 model sporting a 3.42 whereas the 2018 model had a 3.23 rear end. Finally, the 4.3L V6 is being replaced by the 2.7L turbo 4-cylinder for consumer grade trims with the V6 only being available on work truck versions of the new Silverado. All of this adds up to a pickup with worse fuel economy in the volume seller (5.3L V8 with 4WD) than the prior outgoing model. The new 2019 Chevy Silverado certainly is pushing the envelope with a radical new front-end design, a ho-hum interior offset by a larger cabin and bed. Will the lack of impressive fuel economy numbers add to the cons or will people not mind the lack of improvement since it is offset by more towing capacity? We will have to wait until January, 2019 for the first look at the sales for this next-generation Silverado.
